Healthy Gulf is committed to uniting and empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf Region. For 25 years Healthy Gulf has utilized science, policy expertise, and organizing to conserve marine life, sustain coastal communities, protect water, resist dirty energy, and defend wetlands.

While Healthy Gulf operates throughout the Gulf states, they are proud to work closely with watershed organizations like Atchafalaya Basinkeeper. It is through these relationships that significant environmental battles are won. We congratulate Atchafalaya Basinkeeper on their 15 wildly successful years and continued success. - Matt Rota

Some of Atchafalaya Basinkeeper’s Notable accomplishments:

  • Saved most of our coastal cypress swamps (over half a million acres) from becoming cypress mulch or wood pellets, stopped all illegal development of wetlands in the Basin.

  • Worked with pipeline companies and oil companies to minimize their impacts.

  • Running a very effective monitoring and enforcement program.

  • Stopped illegal dumping of oil waste into our Basin’s wetlands.

  • Stopped our Basin from becoming a dump for oil and fracking waste from all over the country.

  • Permit enforcement that our agencies are not doing.

  • ABK has protected more wetlands than any other group. We are honored that Dean Wilson (Founder and Executive Director) was chosen as one of 20 out of over 300 Waterkeepers around the world as a Waterkeeper Warrior representing the best of the Waterkeeper Alliance.
